Friends of Chernobyl's Children

Area: We use premises in the village of Raglan, at the junction of the A40 and the A449, as our base and have had children staying in Rogiet, Langstone, Shirenewton, Abergavenny and Ross on Wye as well as the more immediate Raglan and Usk area itself.

OUR CHILDREN

Some of our children come from the city of Mogilev, others from the surrounding villages. The living conditions of our children are difficult, with overcrowded flats and houses lacking basic facilities. Our main aim is to improve the general health of the children but their visits bring a lot of happiness and excitement into their lives. Since 2001 we have brought over 40 children to Monmouthshire and many of those who have completed the programme remain in touch with their hosts.

The children visit us in June-July for 4 weeks each summer and stay with host households. The children return for up to 5 visits. Interpreters accompany the children and spend each weekday with them and on telephone contact 24 hours a day. Activities are organised for the children using Raglan as our base. As well as visiting the dentist, optician etc the children enjoy many activities and outings such as swimming and quad biking and visits to the beach and zoo. In recent years a highlight has been a 3 day trip to the Gower, staying in the youth hostel at Port Eynon. The children return home to Belarus with lots of wonderful memories as well as clothes, shoes and vitamins.

FUNDRAISING

We are entirely self funding and need to raise money to pay for all our expenses, including the costs of transporting the children to the UK. We could not function without the support of our local community and have been fortunate to have been supported by local schools and groups, as well as generous individuals. We hold regular fundraising events and you can find out more about these by looking at our Facebook page - Friends of Chernobyl's Children (FOCC), Raglan, South Wales.

2013 - NEW GROUP

We will be bringing a new group of children over in 2013 and need new hosts to house them. If you would like to find out more about hosting then please contact Jane - it is never the wrong time to find out more about hosting!
